Who Is The Tallest NBA Player Ever? The Top 10 Amazing Giants In NBA History
A popular question that sports and basketball fans often ask is, “Who is the tallest NBA player?” The NBA is known for showcasing some of the tallest athletes in the world, with some of its best players of all time being over 7 feet tall. Height is an important quality in basketball as it allows players to defend more effectively, guarding the rim and blocking shots.
However, height and inquiries such as “Who is the tallest NBA player?” is not on the minds of NBA general managers quite as much as they used to be, due to the transition of the game away from post-play.
The Tallest 7 foot Players in NBA History
The NBA has boasted some incredibly talented tall players at the center position in its illustrious history. Whether Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, or Yao Ming, it is simply impossible to tell the story of the NBA without mentioning its impressive collection of tall players.
However, some of the tallest NBA players ever aren’t as well known to mainstream sports fans. Those who venture to ask, “Who is the tallest NBA player?” may be surprised at the answer.
Who is the Tallest NBA Player of All Time?
The tallest NBA player in history is Gheorghe Muresan, who played for the Washington Bullets and New Jersey Nets from 1993 to 2000. His 3rd year in the league with the Bullets was his best season, which saw him average 14.5 PPG, 9.6 RPG, and 2.3 BPG.
Muresan along with Manute Bol are the only 2 members in NBA history to play at a listed height of 7 feet, 7 inches tall. While some consider Manute Bol the tallest basketball player to ever play, Muresan was about a quarter inch taller than Bol.
Bol, however, is much more famous than Muresan, who often is forgotten in NBA lore. Muresan himself certainly would prefer more sports fans to ask, “Who is the tallest NBA player?” to get a little more notoriety.
Ironically, Manute Bol played the first several years with the Washington Bullets as well, just like Muresan. He was also teammates with Muggsy Bogues, the shortest NBA player ever standing at 5 feet, 3 inches, during the 1987-1988 season with Washington. Bogues certainly didn’t have to ask, “Who is the tallest NBA player?” during that season.
