He was a 2-time Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year, a McDonald’s All-American, and helped lead Sunrise to a 2nd place finish at the Geico High School National Championship during the 2020-2021 season. The Gradey Dick recruiting process began early during his high school career at Wichita Collegiate School. Dick received offers from several different big-time schools, including Baylor, Florida, Illinois, and Iowa State. However, he chose to play locally for the Kansas Jayhawks, citing the school’s great basketball culture.
He had attended many Jayhawks games growing up and was impressed by the vibrant atmosphere and packed houses that have become synonymous with Kansas Jayhawk basketball. He joined an impressive Kansas basketball roster that included 2 other freshmen who were previously McDonald’s All-Americans as well.

What you will find on a Gradey Dick scouting report
Gradey Dick is more than just a shooter. He’s a talent that plays both sides of the ball. A scorer that knocks down shots, leak outs in transition, defends, and hits his free throws. For the season the Kansas Jayhawks are 18-2 when Dick scores 9 or more points.
Scoring
When putting points on the board Gradey Dick creates his own shots and moves well without the ball to get clean scoring opportunities. Whether creating off the dribble, catching & shooting, cutting to the basket or getting out in transition Dick has been an efficient offensive player for the Jayhawks to date.
Knocking down shots
Either off the dribble or catch & shoot Gradey Dick is a very good shooter from mid range and long distance. Plus he has deep range and the ability to pull from NBA territory.
Shooting off the dribble is a calculated process for Dick. Off the face up & pivot, head fakes keep defenders restless, sweep throughs evade their swipes at the ball and jab steps keep them guessing.
When defenders bite on Gradey Dick’s jab steps they usually have a tough time keeping up with the quick 1st step that follows. It’s a 1st step that often leads to a one or two dribble midrange pull up or a step back that’s more than likely to create separation.
For the persistent defender head fakes raise them off their feet. While the defender is on the way down, Dick attempts to draw fouls in the process of shooting a jump shot by jumping into his vulnerable airborne defender. Dick heads to the line for two when successful. When he’s not successful off balance jumpers are the result.
In catch & shoot situations Dick is always ready to fire. Because he’s already in a shooters stance before the catch he effortlessly gets his shot off. Plus his release point is high and quick.
Scoring at the basket
Gradey Dick is more than just a shooter that scores from the perimeter. He also attacks the basket off the dribble. As already mentioned he has a quick 1st step. And when combined with shimmies off the face up and straight line attacks Dick blows past the defense.
Plus his off ball movement is decent. Dick can also get to the basket for field goal attempts on back door cuts. At the rim he finishes with both hands, acrobatically when avoiding shot blocks and catches lobs.
Leaks out and scores in transition
In transition Dick is often ahead of the pack. His leak outs happen very quickly after turnovers or when shots go up. Some may even feel he cherry picks.
Either way his leak outs lead to spot up, pull up jumpers or finishes at the rim. At the basket Dick does a nice job of evading ball swipers and shot blockers by finishing with acrobatic layups and one handed flushes. Although lacking explosive lift Dick catches lobs and finishes with two handed flushes on the break as well. Dick is also capable of finding shooters.
Defense
For the most part Dick is a reliable defender. Whether switching or staying in front of his man he’s alert and exerts effort. Far from a defensive liability. Plus his hands are quick for steals and he holds his own.
As an on ball defender he’s decent. There’s consistent effort. He slides his feet quickly to stay with his man off the dribble, cut off baseline attacks and keeps close enough to contest jump shots well.
More often than not Dick sticks to his man off the dribble and is never too far behind. But there are also times when he’s left flat footed while struggling to keep up with quick guards.
As an off ball defender Dick can get into the passing lanes for steals. On the flip side he occasionally gets caught sleeping and back doored.
In the post Dick battles with his hands straight up while he bodies up against back down attempts. Quick recognition to take advantage of ball handlers distracted by a help defense double team. Quick hands to strip the distracted and a quick response time to recover balls that are poked loose.
Rebounding
Average rebounder at his position. He boxes out, fights for position and puts himself in the vicinity to grab boards.
Gradey Dick projection at the next level
At the next level Dick has the potential to become a solid two way starting caliber wing. His translatable skills are creating his shot, knocking down jump shots, spacing the floor and stretching the opposing teams’ defenses, scoring with off ball movement, knocking down free throws and scoring in transition. Plus he’ll hold his own on the defensive side of the ball.
But before Gradey Dick can become a solid two way starting caliber wing in the NBA he must first learn to consistently score on a nightly basis. Second, pray he doesn’t go to a team that plans to underutilize his potential and skill set. Ex: A 3 & D role that only requires him to spot up in the corner and play defense. He has so much more to offer.

2022-2023 Season and Beyond
While Dick would most likely be a lottery pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, most likely landing in the 10 to 12 range, there is a small possibility he may choose to play 1 more season at Kansas. He is a very good outside shooter, spaces the floor well, and has decent overall athleticism that will benefit his future career in the NBA.
After a torrid 16-1 start to the season, Kansas has lost 4 of their last 6 games to fall to 18-5. However, they will most likely rebound and end up being a high seed in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, largely as a result of Dick’s contributions.
